What is Yoga?

Yoga is a blend of physical, mental and spiritual practices that came to exist since the ancient times. It is concerned with the overall mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of an inidividual. Yoga is one of the six Āstika schools of Hindu philosophical traditions. The ultimate goal of Yoga is Moksha (liberation), although the exact form this takes depends on the philosophical or theological system with which it is conjugated. The ultimate goal of yoga practice is to achieve the state of Samadhi and abide in that state as pure awareness. It is a disciplined method for attaining a goal. It is also invariably used as techniques of controlling the body, mind and soul.

Yoga is a systematic practice of physical exercise, breath control, relaxation and positive thinking and meditation aimed at developing harmony in the body, mind, and environment. The practice entails low-impact physical activity, postures (called asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation, and meditation. In the health fields, yoga techniques are being applied in health promotion programs, substance abuse treatment programs, and as a complementary treatment for diseases such as anxiety disorders, depression, coronary heart disease, cancers, and HIV/AIDS. Yoga is a low-cost self-help approach to well-being. The origin is a Sanskrit word Yog meaning union. Yoga is a union of the organ systems in the body with the consciousness in the mind. Philosophically, yoga produces a union of body, mind, and energy (or soul or spirit) to bring about a state of equanimity (calmness). What are the qualities of a Yoga Instructor?

Any good yoga instructor must posses within themselves an art of self-discipline and practice. In that way they will be able to teach yoga on the basis of their own experiential learning. A good yoga instructor must very well know the art of empowerment and must be able to teach his/her students more than just the poses of yoga. Generosity is also an essential component a yoga instructor must have because its his own experiences that will allow his/her students to understand yoga better and deeply. Physicality plays an important role. As it is rightly said that the best way to lead is to lead by example and so if a yoga instructor's physicality and flexibility is on point, he will be able to become a benchmark for his students.:

  • Generosity
  • Physicality

How can you start as a Yoga Instructor?

The foremost thing in order to start as a yoga instructor is to practice regularly at least 3 times a day on your flexibility and posture. A yoga instructor must himself be perfect in all the poses he/she teaches his students. Additionally, one can even sign up for a proper professional yoga training to gain perfection. Then you should look up for possible and probable target studios where you would like to take classes. It could be your own home too but then you will have to convert into a proper yoga worthy setting. The environment where the class is taking place should be silent and positive. You should start building a niche for yourself and start with taking two to three students to gain an experience on teaching. After you think you have aced it , you can increase the number of students. At the end, you must set realistic expectations from yourself. This will help you to achieve a lot as an instructor and even more for your students to grasp the art of Yoga.

What are the challenges of being a Yoga Instructor?

One of the challenges of being a Yoga instructor can be the availability of students. No matter how good an instructor you are, there is still a problem in gathering huge amount of students for your classes. Another challenge can be the money problem. One cannot entirely depend upon yoga as a profession to earn a hefty amount especially if he/she is new int the profession. Therefore, people tend to take yoga classes parallely with their jobs and this creates another obstacle of balancing their work and yoga life. Lack of knowledge when some specific terminology related to yoga is concerned can create another challenge. This may look unauthentic and unprofessional to the students. Choosing the right school for yoga teaching and knowing the perfect style of your yoga pose are some other obstacles.
