What is Radio Jockeying?

A radio jockey, also known as radio personality (American English) or radio presenter (British English) is a person who has an on-air position in radio broadcasting. A radio jockey who hosts a radio show is also known as a radio host. Radio jockeys who introduce and play individual selections of recorded music are known as disc jockeys or "DJs" for short. Broadcast radio jockeys may include talk radio hosts, AM/FM radio show hosts, and satellite radio program hosts. A radio jockey hosts multiple types of programs depending upon the time slot and station type, some of these verticles are: FM/AM radio, Talk radio, Sports talk radio, Satellite radio, Internet radio, and many more.

A radio jockey can be someone who introduces and discusses genres of music; hosts a talk radio show that may take calls from listeners; interviews celebrities or guests; or gives news, weather, sports, or traffic information. A radio jockey may broadcast live or use voice-tracking techniques. Increasingly in the 2020s, radio jockeys are expected to supplement their on-air work by posting information online, such as on a blog or on another social media forums. This is done to increase engagement and reach of the jockey. The majority of music radio broadcasting done by radio jockeys through broadcast automation, a pre-automated playlist airing quality MP3 audio files which contain the entire program consisting of songs, advertisement commercials, and a radio announcer's pre-recorded comments.

What are the qualities of a Radio Jockey?

Not everyone can become a Radio jockey. There are many people who aspire to host a radio show but are unable to do that because they do not possess the right characteristics and attitude needed to become one. How can you start as a Radio Jockey?

In the radio jockey scene intense competition is to be expected. This is a popular career choice among youngsters, and one will be competing with many other talented people. There are various steps one can take in order to jump start their career path. With the increase in the number of radio stations which are localised to the extent of specific cities, employers are looking for professional with skills and qualifications to make their show stand out from the rest. A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required by most employers to become a radio jockey. For starters one could study broadcasting, journalism, or communications. Then, to start in a station one should have a proven interest in music, experience of public speaking, a pleasant speaking voice, sound equipment know-how, and technical literacy. If necessary, consider working in unpaid internships to gain experience.

What are the challenges of being a Radio Jockey?

To become a radio jockey and host a live radio show one needs many skills to ace. The major challenge is to be spontaneous at all the time with keeping your sense of humour on point. You need to be up-to-date with all the current trends and news and have to keep studying and learning at all the times. Keeping focus in a live show and lowering the rate of mistakes while talking or addressing the audience is one of most critical challenge for a radio jockey. Also a radio jockey should always be self aware of the tone and pitch of their voice, thus, making the job more challenging every time one picks up the mic.
