What is Poetry?

Poetry is an artistic form of writing which is written by the imagination and emotions. And this artistic piece of writing has an ability to stir the reader's mind, it's written in a way that makes reader think and imagine according to the poem. It is written using aesthetic and rhythmic language and is arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. A great poet defines poetry as "Poetry is the shadow cast by our streetlight imagination". Poetry is written to share ideas, to express emotions and to create imagery. There are different types of poetry and the most common amongst them are narrative poetry, dramatic poetry, lyrical poetry.

A poet is a person who writes poetry. A person who has the gift of poetic thought, imagination, and creation, together with eloquence of expression. A poet makes himself a visionary through a long, boundless, and systematized disorganization of all the senses. A poet's work can be literal, meaning that his work is derived from a specific event, or metaphorical, meaning that his work can take on many meanings and forms. William Wordsworth defines a poet as 'A good poet is someone who manages, in a lifetime of standing out in thunderstorms, to be struck by lightening five or six times; a dozen or two dozen times and he is great.

What are the qualities of a Poet?

A poet should have good communication skills and a good vocabulary at the same time. He/she must have clarity of thought and ability to think and imagine from the perspective of readers too as eventually a poet writes a poem for his/her reader to read it. A poet should keep in mind the choice of meter, it means the rhythm or pattern of speech. A descriptive imagery is must while writing a poem it means what the poet sees, hears or otherwise senses, be it a literal image or one that exists in his mind, It creates a picture that the reader or listener can see in his mind.:

How can you start as a Poet?

If you want to be a poet you need to have a basic knowledge of poetry for that you can study poetry by attending workshops by local authors, take creative writing course online or offline. For being a poet you sbould be able to find your inspiration, pick a subject matter that matters to you, pen down your own emotions. You can find something ordinary to describe in an extraordinary way and read other poets to grt sense of idea. Decide on the style of poem you want to write, brainstorm your thoughts and ideas, use more descriptive words, once finish writing proofread your poem and make the changes accordingly. You can also self publish your poetry collection.

What are the challenges of being a Poet?

There are many challenges and obstacles faced by poets, most common amongst them is finding a publisher. Lack of confidence, fear of spelling, inability to get traction, correct use and expression of words are also challenging for aspiring poets. Competition also is one of the most challenging factor. It is important to gain and attract readers is most difficult task, a reader should be able to connect with the poem while reading a poem and this challenge should be overcome by the poets.
