What is Lyric Writing?

A lyricist’s work is to write words that accompanies music or instrumentals. Often, a successful lyric writer will work closely with a musical composer who can give continuous feedback on how the written lyrics will work in coherence with the music for which it is made. Sometimes a lyricist will be someone who can not only write the words to a song, but can also write the music. This is a definite advantage for any lyricist, because that way they are able to control both aspects of a song, ultimately achieving the artistic feel that they were aiming for. Even if a lyricist does not have the complete ability to write both the words and music-piece, it is an excellent idea if they are able to have a brief understanding of the musical aspect.

A lyricist is the one who writes 'lyric', a verse or poem that is, or supposedly is, susceptible of being sung to the accompaniment of a musical instrument or that communicates vivid and deep emotions in a manner expressive of a song. Lyricists express the thoughts and feelings of the song and are sometimes contrasted with narrative poetry and verse drama, which relates events in the form of a story.

What are the qualities of a Lyricist?

You need a strong knowledge of poetics such as rhyme, meter, wordplay, metaphor and imagery, as well as musical intuition about verses, choruses, refrains and codas to work as a successful lyricist. Transforming this knowledge into lyrics requires originality, vision, creativity, critical thinking, dedication and self-confidence. To get your songs noticed, you also need to be business savvy, well-organized, communicative and trustworthy. Some qualities that you b can find in every top lyricist are::

  • Originality
  • Thoughtfulness
  • Determination
  • Discipline
  • Creativity

How can you start as a Lyricist?

A songwriter may have different roles: a lyricist, a composer or both. Where a composer creates the music or melody, it is the lyricist who writes the words that work in the coherence of that music. To become a lyricist, one requires commitment and practice to ace the skills necessary to write compelling and impressive song lyrics. In the process to become a top lyricist, you’ll need to practice the craft, write numerous song drafts, and find work in the industry. You’ll also want to collaborate with others and seek feedback to improve your work as you develop as a writer.

What are the challenges of being a Lyricist?

The main challenge of being a lyricist while writing songs is distractions. When you already have a lot on your mind, it is difficult to keep up your focus. Another challenge is feeling overwhelmed, when the demands are more than one can handle. It is difficult to switch your mindset when you have to write lyrics on happy or sad theme at the same time. Also when you have written a song with all your focus and capability and still it gets negative feedback, it is difficult to cope up with rejections. You have to learn to accept the feedback and start fro scratch.
