What is News Editing?

Editing is the process of writing where editor attempts to improve a draft by correcting errors and making words and sentences clearer, more accurate and as effective as possible. The editing process involves adding, deleting, and rearranging words to cut the overall structure and streamline the clutter. It's important to decide right from the start what your goal is when you're writing. One of the most critical and challenging tasks of editing is for the editor to consider the author/writer’s style and to retain it when editing. A writer has its own audience, people like them who are looking for a way to convey what they would find difficult to do, and that way has to move through. Particularly because editing goes beyond proofreading, it becomes more important that it continues to allow the voice of the author to express itself best.

There are generally three aspects, or levels, of editing – substantive editing, copying, and proofreading. Substantive editing evaluates and shapes material to improve the organization and content of the material. Editing is all about clarifying meaning, enhancing flow and smoothing the expression. Proofreading is the analysis of content to correct textual errors and visual elements after layout. Proofreading and editing are essential parts of the overall writing process and requires creativity. They assist with the efficacy of your writing style and clarity of your thoughts.

What are the qualities of a Editor?

But regardless of which project an editor tackles, the goal is always the same- to improve the communication quality. One thing all editors have in common is passion for accuracy and detailing. One must not only be proficient in composition, grammar and spelling but also have the ability to think on the behalf of writer and the reader. Here are some common qualities that good editor holds::

  • Accountability
  • Conscientiousness
  • Dedication
  • Creativity
  • Flexibility

But the internet, with its army of anonymous hatemongers, still tried to keep the absurd story alive.

The future of journalism is the need for quality content – and this is not specific to any platform

How can you start as a Editor?

You need to have a real, sincere interest in editing from the start to become a good editor. You should know if you want to create stories by yourself, or work through the gritty writing mechanics like spelling and grammar. You need to understand what interests your audience and striking a delicate balance between diplomacy and honesty. Reading is the key to become a successful editor and finding your own editing niche. It helps in figuring out where exactly your natural skills lie and what you enjoy doing. It is important to note that many editors start their careers as reporters, copy editors, writers or editorial assistants.

What are the challenges of being a Editor?

The editor has the overall responsibility for the content of its publication. Some of the major challenges in this field irrespective of their specialisation/beat are to be logical and exercising the right judgement, working with a given deadline, keeping an eye on the budget, using range of reference material to cover all the aspects of the story, having a network of our own within the industry and last but not the least achieving momentum and clarity of thought. Editors are often expected to make their own decision and work with minimal supervision. Their degree of independence can be a challenge in itself.
