What is Economics?

Economics is defined as a social science that studies the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. In simpler terms, economics is the study of how a society makes use of resources available to it as well as how an economy works. Economics focuses on the behaviour of people and the choices they make in order to most efficiently utilise limited resources. The word ‘economics’ comes from two Greek words - ‘oikos’ meaning house and ‘nomos’ meaning custom or law. Unlike physics or chemistry, economics is not a pure science, but a social science as it studies human interactions in an economic system.

According to Lionel Robbins, “economics is a science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses.” Microeconomics studies basic elements in an economy, such as individual and market demand, the production of goods and services as well as the interactions among economic agents. Macroeconomics, on the other hand, studies the economy as a whole, as an interconnected system where behaviours like production, consumption, saving and investment interact as well as other factors like economic growth, international trade and government policy.

What are the qualities of a Economist?

An economist, in short, is a practitioner in the field of economics. An economist is a person who studies and analyses the relationship between the resources available to a society and how its members utilise them. Economists use this information to research, predict trends, develop concepts and apply them in the formulation of economic policy. Therefore, an economist must have a scientifically-tuned mind and be skilled at understanding complex systems and their relationships. Mathematical and logical aptitude are also essential skills that a good economist must possess, in addition to a degree in economics.:

  • Analytical
  • Curious
  • Scientific
  • Observant
  • Open-minded

How can you start as a Economist?

To get started in the field of economics, it is important to have a firm foundation in the concepts and theories of economics. It is, therefore, a good idea to major in economics or an economics-related subject such as business management, mathematics, statistics or finance. A postgraduate degree in economics is highly recommended. The demand for economists in today’s world is high due to the ever-increasing complexity of the world of business, government policies involving money and the banking system, financial regulations, economic laws as well as international trade agreements. Along with a formal qualification, having a curious, scientific bent of mind and a logic-driven outlook are also essential.

What are the challenges of being a Economist?

Economists are an indispensable group of highly specialised experts who help in both understanding and harnessing the dynamics of the economy. Economists are thought leaders whose work is highly respected. But that is not to say that their job is easy. Economists face several challenges in their day-to-day work as today’s pace of trade and commerce makes the economy highly volatile and tricky to understand. Economists need to keep themselves informed and updated on a wide variety of topics, most of which are flooded with new information every day. They need to keep a close watch on developments both within and outside the country to have a clearer view of the big picture.
