What is Boxing?

Boxing is a combat sport between two participants, usually played wearing protective gloves. Both the participants keep punching each other for predetermined intervals of time in a boxing ring, in the presence of a referee who ensures fair play in the sport and keeps watch on the time intervals known as rounds. The winner is decided by the referee when one of the opponents is incapable of continuing with the fight, disqualified for cheating, or accepts defeat. In the event that both the fighter remains standing after the final round, the judges' scorecards announce the winner. In case that both the participants score equally, the fight is considered to be a draw.

Amateur boxing is both an Olympic and Commonwealth Games sport. In Olympic, as the declaration of a winner is a must, the judges announce the winner based on technical criteria.

How can you start as a Boxer?

Boxing as a career requires years of practice, dedication, and a disciplinary lifestyle. Boxing can be considered as a great fitness sport for cardio, to get into shape, and to build stamina. It can also be chosen as a sport to learn self-defense. There can be many other possible reasons to choose boxing. Initially, a person can start as an amateur boxer and start competing from the initial stage. If you want to start as a boxer, equipment plays an important role. The right types of equipment help a lot in the training. It is best to choose an experienced sparring partner or coach who can correct your mistakes if you do while sparring and also help you learn quickly. Once you have enough experience in sparring, then you can start competing.

What are the challenges of being a Boxer?

Boxing is a sport that requires endless hard work. Boxers need to follow a different lifestyle, totally different from an ordinary person. The interest in this sport is diminishing day by day as all the attention and efforts go to other combat sports. Boxing is one of the sports that is looked down upon by societies because of its violent nature. There are too many championships and champions for the same position but under different sanctioning bodies such as WBO, WBC, WBA, IBF. Boxing these days is confined only to channels like HBO, Showtime, PPV, and sometimes occasionally on ESPN's Friday Night Fights. The major TV networks such as NBC or CBS hardly provides a platform for boxing to showcase its talents and matches. Boxing has failed in recent times that needs exposure in some of the popular sports channels. The problem should be solved to retain the talents in this industry and create a sense of enthusiasm among the potential boxers.
