What is Art and Design?

Art and design are often confused to mean one and the same thing, but there are some differences between the two. Art refers to the vast range of activities that are involved in creating visual or auditory artifacts, or in performances (such as theatre, dance or music) that express the creator’s imagination, ideas, concepts or skills. The purpose of these art forms is intended to be appreciated for their beauty or a message contained therein.

Design, however, refers to a plan or specification for the creation or construction of an object, or for the implementation of an activity or process. Designing refers to the creation and development of a design. Designs can be made even for objects without a set prior plan, such as in the case of a work of craft, computer code or graphic design. Designs usually have to satisfy certain objectives, but they take beauty and aesthetics as well as environment into consideration. Designs can be patterns, engineering drawings, business processes, website layouts and sewing patterns.
